The Explorers
Scots pines and umbrella pines abound on the siliceous soils of the Massif des Ocres in the Luberon region. The particularly creeping roots of the umbrella pine (Pinus pinaster) stabilize and fix the sandy soil on which it grows. If it is well adapted to poor soils, the variety needs light and heat to flourish, hence its presence in Mediterranean areas.
