Famous all over the world, the small town of Saint-Tropez extends on the south-eastern coast of the Var department. It is located on a peninsula of the Massif des Maures that bears its name and closes the eponymous gulf. The town of 2,763 acres (1,118 ha) forms a crescent around the Baie des Canebiers and has 7.4 miles (12 km) of coastline punctuated by six public beaches. Located on the coast, Saint-Tropez's old village leans against a hill that rises to 377 ft (115 m). Populated by less than 4,000 inhabitants until the 1920s, Saint-Tropez numbered 4,103 permanent residents in 2018 after having experienced a constant increase until the 1980s when it reached 6,213 inhabitants in 1982.
