Since 1884, it has been enthroned at the top of the Daru staircase built by Hector Lefuel, the architect of Emperor Napoleon III. The Victory of Samothrace was discovered in 1863 by Charles Champoiseau, French vice-consul and amateur archaeologist. The white Paros marble statue, broken into 110 pieces, was found in a very ancient sanctuary dedicated to the Great Gods. Probably consecrated to thank the gods after a naval victory, it was sculpted around 220-185 BC. Its incomplete right hand, discovered in 1875, is displayed in an adjoining showcase.
