A wood-panel church

The church of the Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix (Exaltation of the Holy Cross) in Bailly-le-Franc (Aube) is very similar in its architectural layout to the church in Lentilles, a few kilometres away. As building stone was scarce in the region, the builders of the 16th century built the churches like their houses, in cob and wood. Tiles made from chestnut wood cover the gable walls. A variety of roofing materials can be distinguished: slate on the bell tower, flat tiles on the nave, Roman tiles on the porch, and the cladding of essentes and chestnut “tavaillons” on certain walls.
