Today, dog sleds have lost their traditional role as a means of transport in favor of snowmobiles, planes or cars, but have become an increasingly popular winter sport offering a wide range of activities ranging from hiking in wilderness areas to sprint or endurance races. The most famous and oldest, the Yukon Quest and Iditarod, are held in Alaska and Yukon, but races are now organized in many other countries such as France, Greenland, Norway or Russia.
