Manual harvesting of grapes in Burgundy is more than a tradition. Though wicker baskets have been supplanted by plastic ones, harvesting machines are totally excluded on most plots. They damage the precious vines of great vintages and compact the soil, suffocating it. Manual picking respects the plants and allows to choose only the most beautiful bunches. During harvest, an incessant ballet takes place between the pickers and the people carrying the baskets filled with grapes. A carrier is usually responsible for a team of ten pickers.
