Owned by the Coastal Protection Agency, the site of the Salins d'Hyères constitutes a mosaic of habitats favorable to the development of a wide range of plant and bird species. The salt marshes welcome noteworthy numbers of elegant avocets, white stilts, ring-necked plovers, black-headed gulls, mocking gulls, Belon shelducks, flamingos, as well as different species of terns. If the salicornia dominates the flora of the Salins d'Hyères, the site is the only one in mainland France where it is possible to find three-horned matthioles or rare and nationally protected species like the African tamarisk.
