A wide range of cymbalizations

The main purpose of the cymbalization of male cicadas is to attract females. In addition to inviting them to mate, it prompts all the males to sing in chorus to capture the attention of females farther away. Different types of calls can be differentiated, like the mating call cymbalization that constitutes a sound-guided invitation for the females, the courtship cymbalization when the females approach, or a worry and opposition cymbalization in the event of rivalry between the males. The female cicada is only sensitive to the song of the males of its species, the intensity of which is proportional to their size. Cicadas also have the ability to relax their eardrum when they sing to prevent it from being damaged by the noise.
