The lac d'Orient extends in humid Champagne, 7,5 mi (12 km) east of Troyes, in the heart of the Orient forest. It was filled with water in 1966. The lake covers an area of 5,683 acres (2,300 ha) for a storage capacity of 208 million m3. It is home to a rich flora that benefits from the variations in water levels. It is also a haven for avifauna, composed of common cranes or black stork, to rest and feed during migrations.
