On 6 June 1944, amongst the 130,000 men that landed on the beaches of Normandy, 5,000 were Jewish. And of the 9,387 headstones in the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery, 149 of them are in fact topped by a Star of David in the same marble white. During the War, all American military plaques listed the name, service number, and religion of their carrier. The US Army however offered all of its Jewish soldiers the option of inscribing a different religion to theirs, so as to protect them from the Nazis; most refused, like this soldier who proudly had a yellow Star of David embroidered on his uniform, which also bore the inscription 'Jew from the Bronx'.
