A white bottom linked to Joséphine de Beauharnais

Baie du François, on the Atlantic coast of Martinique, is home to several sandy shoals or white bottoms between its islets. The most famous of them is the Baignoire de Joséphine (Joséphine's Bath), located 1.2 miles (2 km) off the coast of the municipality of Le François between Thierry and Oscar islets. This wide strip of white shoals is sheltered by a coral reef that protects it from the Atlantic swell. It forms a kind of swimming pool with warm, turquoise, and shallow (1.6 to 4.9 inches / 0.50 to 1.50 m deep) water in which visitors can swim safely in the middle of the ocean. This natural gem would have welcomed Joséphine de Beauharnais, whose real name was Marie-Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie (1763-1814). She was born in Martinique at Trois-Îlets and became the first wife of Napoleon I.
