A wetland unique in Martinique

The Étang des Salines that extends in the background of this aerial shot forms a preserved natural complex located at the southern tip of Martinique in the municipality of Sainte-Anne, behind the Grande Anse des Salines. It consists of a flat wetland of 240 acres (97 ha) both remarkable for its location between coastal forest, savannah, and mangrove and one of its kind in Martinique. As such, it has been designated under the Ramsar Convention relating to the protection of wetlands of international interest. The Étang des Salines results from the exploitation, first artisanal, of the salt marshes of Fond Moustiques from the beginning of colonization and then from their transformation into 42 acres (17 ha) of saltworks during the Second World War. The operation of the site ceased in 1965.
