A village with a homogeneous architecture

Perched on a rocky outcrop in the Monts de Vaucluse, the village of Gordes prides itself on a rich and varied heritage consisting of two abbeys, a castle, several water and wind mills, fountains, washhouses, water pipes, hundreds of bories, and many old hamlets. The construction standards are particularly strict throughout this touristy town of the Luberon region. The traditional stones extracted from local quarries are omnipresent, and the walls are mainly made of dry stone. The light stone houses and the cobbled streets of the village of almost 1,700 inhabitants have inspired many painters and photographers such as Marc Chagall, Jean Deyrolle, Georges Feher, or Willy Ronis.
