A village with a chaotic history

The municipality of Savines-le-Lac extends on the shores of Serre-Ponçon Lake, at the foot of the Grand Morgon massif in the Hautes-Alpes department. In seven centuries of existence, the village has changed location twice. At the end of the 13th century, the first village, destroyed after the French Revolution, extended on the right bank of the Durance at the bottom of the Réallon torrent. The ruins of the old La Font de Savine county castle and of the first parish church are still visible today. The second village of Savines was built on the left bank of the Durance at the beginning of the 19th century. It was evacuated and then drowned during the impoundment of the Serre-Ponçon reservoir on November 16, 1959. The new village was rebuilt higher and renamed Savines-le-Lac.
