In the Haute-Garonne department, the village of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges rises above an ancient Roman city dating back more than 2,000 years. The city of Lugdunum-Convenae was founded in the 1st century BC and was prosperous until the Migration Period in 585. Its ruins still include a forum, an ancient theatre, baths, and a portico square. Lugdunum-Convenae's early Christian basilica is among the oldest Christian churches in southern Gaul. It has been listed as a World Heritage Site along with the Saint-Julien chapel.
