A village of Greek sailors

Yport became a fashionable resort at the end of the 19th century. However, it remains a village of sailors and fishermen who go out to sea daily. As in Étretat, they ground their small fishing boats directly on the beach by towing them on the pebbles. A wooden capstan is attached to the Perrey, and tradition dictates that it is the sailors' wives who turn it. The sailors slide logs under the boat as it goes up the shore. The typical small boats of Yport are called Caïques. It is said that the name comes from the Greeks who landed at the foot of the Pointe du Chicard. As a consequence, the sailors of Yport are also nicknamed the Greeks.
