A village made famous by a prehistoric man

Secluded at the bottom of a narrow valley, the village of Tautavel in the Pyrénées-Orientales department is fairly isolated. The rural town that bears the name Talteüll in Catalan extends within the Comarca, a natural region of Roussillon about half an hour from Perpignan. Tautavel is renowned worldwide for having the Caune de l'Arago on its territory, a prehistoric cave that housed Tautavel man, the oldest known European, 450,000 years ago. Thanks to this discovery, the village experienced significant notoriety and development, with notably the opening of the Museum of Prehistory and brand new equipment like a gymnasium and a congress hall.
