With an epicenter located at sea off Diano Marina and Imperia, the earthquake occurred on February 23, 1887, at 5:43 am. Emblematic of the rare but destructive earthquakes and tsunamis likely to happen at the junction between the chain of the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, this natural disaster affected a total population of 80,000 inhabitants, killed 635 people, and left 555 injured in Liguria. In the Alpes-Maritimes, the earthquake was the origin of eight victims and 51 injured.
