The village of Castellar in the Alpes-Maritimes department is one of the municipalities affected by the 1887 earthquake. With an epicenter located at sea off Diano Marina and Imperia, the earthquake occurred on February 23, 1887, at 5:43 am. Emblematic of the rare but destructive earthquakes and tsunamis likely to happen at the junction between the chain of the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, this natural disaster affected a total population of 80,000 inhabitants, killed 635 people, and left 555 injured in Liguria. In the Alpes-Maritimes, the earthquake was the origin of eight victims and 51 injured.
