A vestige of an ancient priory

0
The chapel Saint-Michel of Prunières is the only vestige of a priory site installed in the 11th century by the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. It stood at a location called La Couche on the edge of the Durance river. While the chapel's foundations are ancient, the part visible today would have been rebuilt in the 17th century after its destruction by the troops of the Duke of Savoy in 1692. Its roof and bell tower were notably redone in 1878. Saint-Michel's location on top of a hill saved it from submersion when the Serre-Ponçon dam was filled in 1961.
