The Ardennes is one of the oldest draught horses in France and Belgium, and probably in Europe. It has been known since Antiquity: in his ‘Commentaries on the Gallic War’, Julius Cesar described it as a “rustic, hardy, and tireless” horse. In the 19th century, numerous crossbreeds and a rigorous selection process transformed the Ardennes into a heavy and powerful draught horse. The end of horse-drawn transport and the use of the motorised tractor led to the decline of its breeding and the drastic reduction of its numbers. Its coat is generally in hues of bay, roan, or chestnut.
