The volcanoes of the Monts Dore massif, among which we find Puy de Sancy (photo), emerged on top of the granite and gneissic plateaus of Massif Central, inside a vast ellipse of 21.7 miles (35 km) between Saint-Pierre-Roche and Lake Chauvet on a North-South axis, and 9.9 miles (16 km) between La Bourboule and Murol on the East-West axis. Volcanic materials, projections, and lava flows spread out over an area of approximately 372 sq. miles (600 sq. km).
