A vast marsh organized in parallel strips

Installed over 11,120 acres (4,500 ha) in a former meander of the Seine, the Marais Vernier extends on the migration route of many birds. Ospreys, gray herons, peregrine falcons, and white storks live and nest amid its reedbeds and marshy meadows. The Grande Mare occupies the center of the marshes, the parcels system of which consists of parallel strips called coutils. The Marais Vernier's proximity to the Seine estuary makes it a protected Natura 2000 site.
