Renowned for its sharp dykes, the Chaudefour valley is one of the most beautiful trough valleys in Auvergne. The valley was classified as a National Nature Reserve 30 years ago thanks to the richness of its fauna and flora, of which some species or subspecies are endemic to the Auvergne. These include the butterfly Apollo arverne (Parnassius apollo arvernensis), and plants like the Biscutelle (Biscutella arvernensis), the Jasione crépue d'Auvergne (Jasione crispa) and the Lamotte saxifrage (Saxifraga lamottei).
