If the flamingo inhabits several regions of the world, it is only observable in France in Camargue. It constitutes one of the 400 bird species present in this vast territory of 440,000 acres (178,000 ha) throughout the year. The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) belongs to the Phoenicopteridae family, which includes the six species of flamingos on the planet. Among the James, Andean, Caribbean, Chilean, lesser, and greater flamingos, only the last one is observable in Europe.
