A unique lake in mainland France

The lower waters of Lake Pavin – one of the few meromictic lakes in the world and the only one in mainland France – do not mix with surface waters and become loaded with volcanic gases, including dissolved carbon dioxide. Deprived of oxygen, they contain unique primitive microorganisms which live below 213 feet (65 metres), some of which had never been observed before.
