A unique framing workshop

Opened in 1793, the Louvre Museum has continued to expand its surface area and collections under the impetus of Napoleon Bonaparte and later Napoleon III. Today, it is ranked second only to the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg for its collection of 12,000 paintings. The Louvre has a total of nearly 680,000 works of art, of which only 35,000 are on display. In the museum’s second basement, a framing workshop allows experienced craftsmen to repair and refurbish a collection of some 10,000 frames. It is the only museum in the world to have its own framing workshop.
