A typical village of Alsace
1
0
Riquewihr is a wine-growing village located in the heart of the Alsace wine route. The first mention of Riquewihr dates from 1094, the village was then a possession of the counts of Horbourg who built in 1291 the first fortified enclosure, still very well preserved. The city's golden age is in the 16th century, a period during which it grew rich thanks to the vineyard. It was attached to France in 1796. The city suffered little damage during the two world wars, which explains its extraordinary state of conservation. Its half-timbered houses, typical of Alsace, make it one of the most beautiful villages in the region.
