A typical romantic vision of Vercingétorix

Built in Paris using the technique of the Statue of Liberty by sculptor Aimé Millet and first exhibited at the Palais de l'Industrie for the Exhibition of 1865, the statue of the monument to Vercingétorix of Alise-Sainte-Reine (Côte-d'Or) was transported and installed near the archaeological site of Alésia on August 28, 1865. This work of more romantic than realistic inspiration represents the archetype of the Gaul in the imagination of the time. The features of Vercingétorix recall those of Napoléon III, the sponsor of the statue. As for the outfit of the Gallic chief, it is full of anachronisms (pearl necklace, bronze breastplate and sword, strips enclosing the breeches). Listed as a Historical Monument by decree of January 17, 2014, the statue was inaugurated on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 2015.
