Officially named Place du Général de Gaulle, Place de la Rotonde is the focal point of the past and future of urban development in Aix-en-Provence. Its fountain was built in 1860 according to the plans of the Ponts et Chaussées engineer Théophile de Tournadre, assisted by the works supervisor Mr. Silvestre. Its construction marked a turning point in the history of Aix-en-Provence's fountains because of its dimensions and the innovation represented by its cast-iron basin. The fountain extends over a total diameter of 134 ft (41 m) and a height of 39 ft (12 m).
