A tribute to the makers of the Louvre

In 1851, Delacroix’s painting was hung in the central coffer of the ceiling of the Louvre’s Gallery of Apollo. This marked the end of the vault’s decoration, however, the walls’ decoration still needed to be revisited. In 1854, Félix Duban, who was in charge of the restoration, ordered 28 tapestries from the Manufacture des Gobelins. Twenty artists, including Félix Jobbé-Duval and Eugène Appert, worked for nine years to produce them. The tapestries represent the monarchs and artists who worked on the construction of the Louvre Palace.
