A tribute to sovereign patrons

The decoration of the dome of the Salle Denon was carried out from 1863 to 1866. Its main motif is an ode to French royal or imperial patronage of the fine arts. Tribute is paid to Louis IX (Saint Louis), François I, Louis XIV and Napoleon I and the artistic achievements under their reign. In the four corners of the ceiling, the monograms of the sovereigns are surmounted by a golden eagle. The central decoration of the dome symbolises “France engraving the profile of Napoleon III on a marble table”. Around it, medallions represent Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, and Engraving.
