Today, the Var department only has around three hundred artisanal fishermen threatened with extinction. Victims of globalization and productivism, the artisans bear the brunt of European directives that tend to standardize their profession. They also suffer from the increasing number of boaters who spoil the nets and exhaust their resources. Their ancestral economic model of fishing labor courts managed on a community basis by the fishermen themselves is undermined by the European Union, which does not recognize their legitimacy. French regulations also do not take into account the specificity of the Mediterranean Sea, characterized by a low quantity of landed fish, the versatility of fishing methods, the seasonality of catches, and short circuits with direct sales.
