Formerly known as Pons Audomaris, Pont-Audemer was first a Gallic city located near an important Roman road during the Antiquity. In order to take advantage of the town's ideal location between two arms of the Risle river, canals were created to work leather. William the Conqueror equipped his army with leather from Pont-Audemer, and the quality of the work made the reputation of the town. English buckle makers settled there in the 18th century and increased the appeal of handcrafted creations. In 1821, Thierry Hermès also came to Pont-Audemer to perfect his skills as a saddler.
