A tower with high rooms

Located on the former site of the Matafère tower in Aigues-Mortes, the Tour de Constance was built by Saint Louis in 1242. In the center of the Salle des Gardes (guards' room), on the ground floor, a circular opening covered with a grid is the only access route to the storeroom in the basement. This room, 33 ft (10 m) in diameter and 39 ft (12 m) high, comprises a cupboard, a bread oven, a well, and a statue of Saint Louis. On the first floor of the Tour de Constance is the Salle des Chevaliers (knights room), which has the same volume and architecture as the Salle des Gardes. Before entering this room, visitors cross a vaulted vestibule that served as an oratory for Saint Louis.
