A tobacco factory and a church

The Gros-Caillou district is located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Its name comes from the Middle Ages. At the time, a stone boundary marker separated the parishes of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Sainte-Geneviève. In the 18th century, the district was still very rural and had no emblematic monuments. There was only a tobacco factory – the Gros Caillou factory, which employed more than 1,000 workers – and the small Saint-Pierre-Gros-Caillou church, built in 1738. When the administrative districts were created in 1859, the name Gros Caillou was retained and given to the area.
