A telescope in a partitioned tower

The Bernard Lyot telescope housed in a concrete tower 92 ft (28 m) high and 46 ft (14 m) in diameter weighs 65 tons for 6.6 ft (2 m) in diameter. The building's internal structure supports the telescope, while its external frame bears the dome. The dissociation of the two parts makes it possible to limit the effects of strong winds and the vibrations generated by the rotation of the dome during the observation phases. The astronomical observatory located at the Pic du Midi de Bigorre delivers scientific results in the fields of astrophysics, planetology, and cosmology.
