The Pont du Gard near Nîmes is a UNESCO World Heritage monument. Built shortly after the Christian era, it was designed to allow the aqueduct of Nîmes to cross the Gardon. This three-level bridge is a technical and artistic masterpiece designed by hydraulic engineers and Roman architects. The aqueduct of which the Pont du Gard constitutes the major element is more than 32 miles (52 km) long and was built in the middle of the 1st century to supply the city of Nîmes with drinking water. The bridge itself rises to a height of nearly 164 ft (50 m).
