A symbolic castle

The location of Château-Gaillard in the Eure department is very strategic. Chosen by the King of England Richard the Lionheart in 1189, its positioning about 300 feet (90 m) above a curve of the Norman Seine facing an island allows the defense of the Seine Valley. After a first attempt to conquer the Valley by France, a treaty was signed by the two kings in 1196 stating that it was forbidden to fortify this site. This is undoubtedly why the English king chose despite everything to build this castle there, as a symbol.
