The word rosace (derived from rose) is an architectural term that designates an element of decoration, generally located on either side of the transept of a church. It is made up of arabesques inscribed in a circle around a central button. In the Middle Ages, that motif appears mostly in Gothic architecture. It associates the rose, a symbol of purity and love, with the circle representing the sun. Numerous roses are engraved in the pink stone of the chapels of Mont Saint Odile.
