The roofs made of flat glazed tiles drawing colorful patterns are characteristic of traditional Burgundian architecture. In Beaune, those of the Hôtel-Dieu (photo) are particularly renowned. Symbols of prestige, they reflect the opulence of the owner of the building they cover. These polychrome roofs were first used for the great cathedrals of the 13th century and then the princely residences in the 14th century before opening up to the wealthy urban bourgeoisie over the course of the next century.
