Dominating the Alsace plain, the Haut-Koenigsbourg is the most famous fortified castle in the region. Since its construction in 1147, it was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times throughout incessant wars with Austria, Germany, or Sweden. After the siege of 1633 that left it in ruins, the castle remained abandoned for two centuries before being renovated under Emperor Wilhelm II. Almost nine centuries of turbulent history permeate the walls of this Alsatian symbol.
