The fortress of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is a good example of well-preserved Burgundian medieval architecture. The 12th-century castle was built on a 1,558 ft (475 m) high promontory overlooking the Canal de Bourgogne. Its keep dates from its construction in 1195, while the Hundred Years' War prompted the building of its ramparts. The castle of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is in the shape of an oblong enclosure with five towers and curtain walls from the 13th century. It was not until 1457 and the granting of the castle to the adviser of the Duke of Burgundy that it displayed dwellings in Flamboyant Gothic style, dear to the ducal court.
