The ancestor of the Montbeliarde cow first arrived in France when farmers from the Swiss Oberland settled with their cattle in the Montbéliard region (Franche-Comté). In the 18th century, crosses were made with the Red Mountain Pyrenean breed. Amongst the Montbeliarde breeds, we can distinguish the Tourache with its red coat, which is a good milk producer, and the Fémeline, which is finer and wheat-coloured. The Montbeliarde breed was officially recognised at the 1889 Paris World Fair. Its milk rich in fat is highly valued within the cheese-making industry.
