The GHM art foundry in Sommevoire, Haute-Marne, has existed since 1857. At the time, thirty or so workers shared the work, each with a specific job. The cart driver and the loader fed the coal into the blast furnace and the skidder sorted the ore for smelting. The lords were the forge master and the smelter on whom everything depended. As for the caddy, he was the handyman. The work was strenuous and dangerous, and the life expectancy of the workers was hardly more than 40 years.
