Riquewihr is a village preserved from the Second World War. Its enclosures, dungeon, prison, houses are an intact vision of life in the Middle Ages. Land taxes were already being paid to the Lord on condition that the buildings touch the ground. The trick to avoid it was to build inhabited bridges which linked the houses together. The many alleys which radiate in the city are therefore full of these arcades which span them.
