Listed as a Historical Monument in 1875, the ruins of the Castle of Arques-la-Bataille (12th century) stand 423 ft (129 m) high on a former castle mound (ancestor of the fortified castle). A valley separates it to the west from the Plateau Cauchois and offers the fortress a strategic view as far as the sea. Joan of Arc stayed there in 1431 before being judged and burnt at the stake in Rouen. Henri IV led a decisive battle there during the French Wars of Religion in 1589. Abandoned, the castle was gradually dismantled by the inhabitants from 1708.
