The official summer residence of the President of the French Republic, the Fort de Brégançon is located on the Mediterranean coast on the territory of Bormes-les-Mimosas, in the Var department. It stands on the heights of a rocky outcrop rising 114 ft (35 m) above sea level a few meters from Cap Bénat, to which it is connected by a jetty. The rocky islet, first called Pergantium, then Briganconia, derived from the Celtic briga (height), has housed a fortress since the arrival of the Ligurians of the Bormani tribe in 118 BC.
