Nicolas Rolin, the Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, chose Beaune to set up his hospital foundation after obtaining authorization from Pope Eugene IV to found a hospital with a chapel. The hospital was implanted at a strategic location in the heart of the city near the markets and the Cordeliers convent, against the ramparts of the fortified city, and on the Bouzaize. The 10 miles (16.8 km) long river made it possible to settle the question of the evacuation of the effluents from the hospital establishment.
