A strategic hill over the gulf

The citadel of Saint-Tropez was built at the beginning of the 17th century on the Colline des Moulins (Mills' Hill). West of the historic heart of the village, this wooded hill dominates both the town, at the time mainly inhabited by fishermen, and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. The site had already been equipped with fortifications in 1583 to defend the coasts against pirates, privateers, and the Ottoman Empire.
