After the end of the Hohenstaufen, a second imperial dynasty integrated the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle into its possessions: the Habsburgs. The fortress then retains all its strategic importance. It marks the western boundary of the Holy Roman Empire, exposed to the appetites of the Duke of Lorraine and the King of France. But the castle represents a heavy burden for the Habsburgs. They fail to maintain a fortress that has been enlarged several times, and cannot afford its garrison.
